1: Have A Goal

What are you hoping to accomplish in your new position? Every business wants to increase sales, of course, but you can usually find secondary motivators when you dig into the culture and creed of the company. Do they pride themselves on their warm customer service? Are they known for their speed in ordering and shipping? Use these talking points in your objective to make yourself an attractive candidate.

2: Emphasize Your Qualifications

Account managers can come from all walks of life, so if you have actual rewards or certifications within the industry, you’ll set yourself apart from other, lesser applicants. If you’re a member of the Strategic Account Marketing Association (SAMA), say so. If you earned a degree in business administration, include the details of where and when.

3: Show Your Climb

Almost all account managers started off as a sales rep or purchasing agent before being promoted. Highlight this ascent in your resume even if it violates the usual rules about not going back too far in your work history. You want your employer to see that you’ve labored long and hard to become a manager, so even if you began your sales career 20 years ago, list those names and dates.

4: Know The Software

While every company has their own preferences for software, most will require you to have a working knowledge of programs like PowerPoint and MS Office. You can gain extra points for mentioning your familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) or sales force automation (SFA) software. The less on-the-job training you need, the more likely someone will hire you to hit the ground running.

5: Be A People Person

Account managers are expected to work closely with both clients and staff. This isn’t a job where you crunch numbers while hidden away in an office; you’re typically on the phone, meeting new people or working out in the open on any given day. Show your boss that you understand these demands by including “friendly attitude” and “good communication skills” under your talents.

Account managers are sales representatives who work with clients rather than products. Instead of directly selling a company’s goods, they act as liaisons between buyer and seller in order to establish a strong relationship with repeat customers.
