Accountant Resume Tips
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accountants can look forward to a 22 percent job increase in the next five years. But what if your resume lacks that extra spark? Will you be able to take advantage of the market growth if your application doesn’t shine with promise? Here are six ways to make your resume stand out from the rest.
1: Have An Objective
Don’t just parrot back what you think the brass wants to hear. Instead, offer a genuine goal based on either performance or finances. For example, you might express a desire to “optimize skills as a collections specialist” or “increase [Company Name’s] revenue.”
2: Identify Your Skills
Show hiring managers what you can do by listing all your skills as an accountant. If you’re a whiz at bank reconciliations, say so; if you have a knack for expense analysis or fixed asset accounting, mention those as well. Don’t be afraid to make a long, impressive list filled with all your talents and capabilities.
3: Offer Quantitative Results
Use specific percentages and dollar amounts whenever possible. Don’t just brag about increasing employee efficiency through the implementation of business process re-engineering; explain that it generated an additional 14 percent in gross income and $2 million less in payroll fraud. Also mention the team of six that you supervised during tax season for 20 business accounts.
4: Know Your Software
Accountants should be familiar with a mixture of clerical and financial software. MS Office is a given; so is QuickBooks for bookkeeping. You might also want to express a proficiency in PowerPoint in case your employer will want you to deliver presentations to investors and shareholders.
5: Explain Your Title
Are you a certified public accountant (CPA) or certified management accountant (CMA)? Or maybe you’re still waiting to take your exams as a certified internal auditor (CIA). Whatever your title, go into detail about the classes and work experiences that were required to achieve it. Every state has different regulations, so there’s no general standard.
6: Highlight Professional Memberships
If you aren’t already a subscriber to the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), now is the time to sign up. You should also emphasize any participation in financial boards or state societies for CPAs. This will demonstrate to potential employers that you’re serious about success and education in the field.
Accountant Job Description
Accountants are business professionals who measure, monitor, analyze and improve the financial standings of a company or corporation. They’re in charge of safeguarding the monetary success of their brand, usually through a combination of risk analysis and internal auditing, but their responsibilities can also include everything from managing portfolios to preparing tax returns.
