1. Detail Your Qualifications

Different states have different prerequisites for becoming a dental hygienist, so it’s important to make note of what degrees, certificates and licenses you have, especially if you obtained them across state lines. Mention both the credential itself (“an associate’s degree in dental hygiene”) and what you did to earn it (“60 hours of coursework and 100 hours of on-the-job training”).

2. Know the Lingo

Don’t talk about X-rays. Talk about “digital radiography.” You might also want to name-drop certain organizations like the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA). This will show that you’re both committed to the industry and knowledgeable about all the organizations that keep it running.

3. Be A People Person

As a dental hygienist, part of your job will be putting patients at ease before they go under the lights for the official dentist. You should have a warm, caring air that comes across even in your resume. For example, you might crack a joke in your cover letter or include a single exclamation point in your conclusion. Aim for professional yet personable.

4. Talk Tools

You should know your way around X-rays, of course, but how are you with intra-oral cameras? Do you have any experience with sealants, fluorides and diagnodent usage? Every dental office has a different storage closet, so make a point of mentioning every tool, supply or machine that you’ve mastered. You never know which skill will get you an interview.

5. Highlight Any Experience With Anesthesia

Most dental hygienists have worked with anesthesia at some point, so it isn’t a skill that will set you apart from the crowd. If you can offer expert knowledge, however, you’re sure to rise above your rivals. Talk about your mastery of nitrous oxide. Highlight your skill with both gas and liquid numbing agents. Mention any certifications you’ve obtained in anesthesia as a whole.

6. Touch on Cleanliness and Sanitation

You’ll need to clean more than just mouths as a dental hygienist. You’ll also be responsible for washing instruments, wiping down counters and disinfecting various tools. If you can show your employer that you take these duties seriously, you’ll put yourself ahead of candidates who never mention sanitation at all.

7. Detail Your Previous or Current Position

How many patients do you see each day? Does your boss trust you to open the office in the mornings? Do you handle all of the paperwork or train new employees as they’re hired? Instead of a dull, uninformative list of names and employment dates, offer a few pertinent details about your old jobs.
