1: Make Safety A Recurring Theme

There are few bodily fluids as dangerous as blood. To show your employer that you understand these risks and can handle them responsibility, mention safety several times in your resume. Talk about “care” when taking samples; briefly touch on policy and procedure when discussing your skills; include any training in hazardous waste disposal in your education or experience section.

2: List Any and All Credentials

Only a few states require advanced qualifications to become a phlebotomist, but having the right acronyms on your resume will make it stand out from competitors with nothing more than on-the-job training. For example, reference your certification from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or the classes you took with the National Phlebotomy Continuing Education (NPCE). Definitely mention if you’re a Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT).

3: Discuss Your Skills in Detail

Since there aren’t any national exams for phlebotomists, it’s important to list all of your relevant skills so your employer will know exactly what you can do. Talk about your experience with venipuncture and blood analysis; list the brands of tourniquets, vacuum tubes and infusion pumps that you’ve used in the past. Show your employer that you’re a phlebotomist of many talents.

4: Emphasize Your Bedside Manner

Don’t be afraid to inject a little warmth and friendliness into your resume. As one of the patient’s first contacts with the medical staff, phlebotomists are responsible for setting their minds at ease just as much as drawing their blood. You’ll need exceptional interpersonal skills for the job, and those skills should be on full display in your application.

5: Describe Your Previous Positions

When listing your job history, offer a brief description of each facility and the skills you learned there. If you worked in a busy blood bank, talk about its fast-paced, high-volume environment. If you worked in a small and understaffed clinic, discuss how it taught you the value of multitasking without sacrificing patient care. You should also make a point of listing any rewards, certificates or accolades that you received as part of a team.

6: Show Related Interests

If you don’t have a lot of experience as a phlebotomist, or if you’re just looking for a good way to enhance a resume filled with dry titles and job descriptions, think about including a section with relevant but not job-required work. For example, comment on your knowledge of anatomy, chemistry and psychology; talk about the volunteering you do at blood donation drives. Show your employer that you’re committed to the field beyond your 9-5 career.
