1: Have A Specialty

Do you excel at in-the-moment wildlife photography? Are you frequently requested for weddings and bridal shoots? Expert photographers in a particular field have much more career longevity than those who claim to be a jack of all trades. Even if you’ve dabbled in multiple fields in the past, pick a focus area for your resume and stick to it.

2: List Your Equipment

The quality of your camera can have a substantial impact on the job offers you receive, especially if you’re working in a highly technical field where low-end photography equipment simply won’t perform to the necessary standard. Don’t be afraid to boast about the camera that you use for your shoots.

3: Mention Your Editing Skills

If you can edit your photos in addition to capturing them, you’ll make yourself much more attractive to studios who are usually forced to outsource that job to others. Make sure to mention if you have experience with resizing, retouching or relighting your photos with filters and good color balance.

4: Showcase Your Awards

Open your resume by describing yourself as “the recipient of Nashville’s #1 Wedding Photographer Award.” Frame your accomplishments with “as seen in the January 2014 issue of National Geographic.” A photographer is only as good as their portfolio, and this is your chance to prove your value to them.

5: Namedrop The Right Software

Many studios are set in their ways when it comes to the kind of software they use for their business, so it isn’t uncommon for employers to scour a stack of resumes looking for the one that mentions Capture One Pro or CorelDraw specifically. List every single program you’ve worked with in the past. Even if you only admit to rudimentary skills with them, the keywords will get you noticed.

6: Be A Team Player

Very few photographers work alone in the modern studio. They’re expected to collaborate with assistants, producers and technicians in order to optimize results and manage multiple projects. If you have any skills leading a team, or if you’ve been part of a larger team, you’ll want to include that information on your resume.

Photographer Job Description

Photographers are creative professionals who immortalize people, places and life events through commercial-grade images. Though their primary work is in the field, posing and shooting, they may also be responsible for editing their creations with computer software or marketing their brand through promotions and networking events.

Photographers are expected to be the unseen observers for everything from weddings to family portraits. They may freelance or work for a professional studio, publisher or agency.
